School-aged neurodevelopmental outcomes for children born extremely preterm

چکیده
As survival rates for children born extremely preterm (EP, <28 weeks’ gestation) have increased with advances in perinatal and neonatal care, their long-term functioning quality of life assume more importance. Outcomes early childhood provide some information, but outcomes at school-age are informative life-long functioning. Children EP substantially higher intellectual impairment, poorer executive, academic motor function, neurodevelopmental disability, health-related than do contemporaneous term-born controls. Because the adverse remain unacceptably high, particularly since may be deteriorating rather improving over time, new strategies to ameliorate these problems, targeting periods before, during after birth, throughout lifespan, a priority.

The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of voice abnormality, voice-related quality of life, and demographic and intubation factors in this population. METHODS Survivors <25 weeks' gestational age in Western Australia born from 1996 to ...
متن کاملCompromised approximate number system acuity in school-aged children born extremely preterm.
The ability to visually estimate and compare numbers, and to detect specific difficulties in mathematical abilities at school, are fascinating topics that have been receiving increasing attention in the last few years with a specific interest in children born preterm. It is well known that preterm birth can influence brain volume and maturational processes. It also reduces cortical organization...
متن کاملSelf-regulation in Children Born Extremely Preterm
Survival rates are increasing for children born extremely preterm, yet despite the majority of these children having IQ scores within the average range, 50-70% of these children have later school difficulties. This paper reviews factors associated with academic difficulties in these children, emphasizing the contributions of executive functions (EF) and self-regulation. The roles of EF are exam...
متن کاملPostnatal dexamethasone, respiratory and neurodevelopmental outcomes at two years in babies born extremely preterm
IMPORTANCE Postnatal dexamethasone is associated with reduction in bronchopulmonary dysplasia. There remains, however, concern that its short-term benefits are accompanied by long-term adverse effects e.g. poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to determine the effects of administration of postnatal dexamethasone on respiratory and neurodevelopmental outcome at two years of...
متن کاملSchool-age outcomes of extremely preterm or extremely low birth weight children.
OBJECTIVE Research is required to monitor changes in the nature of neurobehavioral deficits in extremely preterm (EP) or extremely low birth weight (ELBW) survivors. This study examines cognitive, academic, and behavioral outcomes at age 8 years for a regional cohort of EP/ELBW children born in 1997. METHODS The EP/ELBW cohort comprised all live births with a gestational age <28 weeks (EP) or...
